Crime of the Week – Smoke Barns

Since the end of October, there have been several break and enters into Smoke Barns curing tobacco in the area of Fargo Road, Erieau Road, and Talbot Trail.

Not only is the theft of several thousand stalks of tobacco a concern to the farmers, but also the risk of fire when opening one of these barns. The potential loss of a crop could cost the farmer hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The suspect in these thefts would have to have knowledge of the tobacco industry. At this stage the tobacco is of little value to anyone as it requires further specialized treatment to make it a marketable product.
